SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPES

are responsive to the environment and can positively contribute to the development of healthy communities. While energy efficiency remains the Holy Grail for green buildings, sustainable landscapes help sequester carbon, clean the air, promote water conservation, prevent resource depletion, and create value through significant economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Rain Water Harvesting

DRAINAGE BIOSWALES

By carefully grading a subtle channel throughout your landscape, you can direct the flow of water to a rain garden or drain. As the water runs through the landscape, it’s filtered by plant roots and soil to remove toxins, such as from an asphalt-shingled roof. With a bioswale, the water is directed through the landscape, but may not always be reused.

RAIN BARRELS

A rain barrel is a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof  that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams. Usually a rain barrel is composed of a 55 gallon drum, a vinyl hose, PVC couplings, a screen grate to keep debris and insects out, and other off-the-shelf items. A rain barrel is relatively simple and inexpensive to construct and can sit conveniently under any residential gutter down spout.

Drought Talerant Plants

MEDITERRANEAN

Mediterranean climate is a term derived from those countries bordering the Mediterranean Basin such as France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Morocco.  The climate also occurs in the central coastal California.  Mediterranean gardens feature plants full of texture and color. Desired plant characteristics for a Mediterranean garden:

  • Drought Tolerant
  • Cold hardy
  • Tough and Independent

CALIFORNIA NATIVES

Most drought tolerant California Natives are available at local nurseries.

Benefits of California natives:

  • Save Water
  • Reduce Fertilizers
  • Support Local Ecology
  • Invite Native Birds, Bees, and Butterflies

Edible Gardens

PERMACULTURE

Permaculture systems sustain both themselves and their caregivers. The ultimate purpose of permaculture is to develop a site until it meets all the needs of its inhabitants, from food and shelter to fuel and entertainment.

Permaculture emphasizes the use of native plants or those that are adapted to your locale. The goal is to plant things you like while making sure they have purpose and benefit the landscape in some way.

EDIBLE GARDEN GUIDELINES

  1. Emulate natures blueprint and enhance it with useful  plants and animals.
  2. Stack plants into gilds. Discover plants that work well together.
  3. Make use of native plants and others adapted to the site.
  4. Divide yard into zones based on use.
  5. Identify microclimates in your yard and use them appropriately.

For the first time dealing with a landscaper, Riley was easy to understand what he intended to do for me. He and his helper were on time and worked very hard to get the job done in a timely manner. He will continue to get my business when I need anything done in the future.
